Denise's parents wrote an open letter to little Denise Pipitone, who disappeared in 2004. In the document, published on the blog of the official website (http://cerchiamodenise.blog.aruba.it) it reads: "This is the fifth Christmas that we spend without you, we miss being able to hug and cuddle you so much, we miss your voice, your little songs, your cheerfulness and your laughter." Piera Maggio and Piero Pulizzi hope that the message can reach the little girl directly: "May this open letter reach You." It is an invitation to the kidnappers to release her so that "they may realize how much harm they are causing us and reconsider, go back on their steps." These heartfelt words end with a tangible sign of will, so that the search will never end: "We will not give up easily, we will fight until the end... We will always continue to look for you."

Today in Rome a conference for the protection of minors
Today at 11:00 am in the Sacristy Hall in Vicolo Valdina, 3/a, a conference was held entitled "Denise Law: introduction of article 605-bis of the penal code regarding the abduction of minors," attended by the Honorable Barbara Mannucci, PdL deputy, Dr. Luigi Ripani, colonel of the RIS of Rome, Mrs. Piera Maggio, mother of little Denise, lawyer Giacomo Frazzitta, legal representative of the Pipitone family, and Dr. Federica Sciarelli, host of the popular program "Chi l'ha visto?". The meeting focused on the presentation of a revision of the law, originally drafted by the Pipitone family's law firm, which provides for harsher penalties for the abduction of minors without the purpose of extortion. "We have been waiting for a sign of change for a long time: and that is why I have been fighting strenuously for months, so that the right direction is taken," declared Piera Maggio. "I want to point out that thanks to the availability of the Minister of Justice Alfano and the commitment of Hon. Barbara Mannucci, today we have managed to lay a serious foundation for the protection of our children."

Mazara del Vallo (TP), November 7, 2008. The "document of trust" promoted by the Association Cerchiamo Denise Onlus (www.cerchiamodenise.it ) is making the rounds on the web in these hours, in which Denise's mother, Piera Maggio, asks women and mothers for moral support for the activities carried out in favor of minors. In the document, promoted as part of the initiatives of the Children and Media Committee, an act of trust is requested, so that it is not only "Piera's war," but a battle for the right to a peaceful life for all children. This petition, sent to over 200 women's associations, including professional, cultural, humanitarian, artistic, and civil rights organizations, aims to legitimize the work of Piera Maggio in the social interest and not only in the particular case of her daughter Denise. Numerous signed subscriptions have arrived in these hours from all over Europe. Meanwhile, in Catania, on Sunday, November 9, the special "Maugeri-Amenano d'Argento 2008" award will be presented to Piera Maggio herself for the courage of a mother who for four years has been devoted to a heartbreaking struggle to find her daughter Denise.

3) The letter of solidarity from Hon. Barbara Mannucci towards Mrs. Maggio, published in "il giornale" on October 30, 2008, received an immediate reply (on the same day) from Dr. Maria Giovanna Maglie. Therefore, we proceeded with an analysis of the text to better understand what might have been the premises for drafting such a response. For each sentence by the author, in bold [M.G.M], there follows an extended comment in italics by the journalists of the Public Information Office of the Cerchiamo Denise Onlus Association, [U.P.I - C.D].
DIFFERENT SENSITIVITIES ABOUT DENISE'S KIDNAPPING (??)
[U.P.I - C.D] We would like, first of all, to comment on the headline proposed by the editorial staff of "il giornale." The word "sensibility," when attributed to a human being, according to the Italian dictionary is defined as: 1) the ability to perceive through the senses 2) the possession of particular abilities to feel and understand one's own or others' affections, emotions, feelings, works of art, and manifestations of the natural world. In general, this word is not used as a substitute for "points of view" or "opinions." In fact, if the reader takes care to read the rest of this analysis, it will become clear that there is nothing "sensitive" in Dr. Maglie's response (as defined by the dictionary), but rather a reiteration of an opinion already expressed in her previous articles. Whoever published this headline clearly does not know the meaning of the word "sensibility" or, more shrewdly, wrote this word to soften Dr. Maglie's "insensitive" position (as judged in the letter from Hon. Barbara Mannucci) in the eyes of the public.
[M.G.M.] Dear madam, the kidnapping of Denise Pipitone has been surrounded from the very beginning by extraordinary interest and a worrying ambiguity.
[U.P.I - C.D] We agree that the kidnapping of Denise Pipitone, since it concerns a 4-year-old minor kidnapped in front of her home, just like other well-known cases internationally, is an exceptionally serious event that arouses extraordinary interest. However, we do not understand the meaning of the phrase "worrying ambiguity." We interviewed several people, asking if they felt concerned by any ambiguity in the Denise Pipitone case, and none confirmed this hypothesis. Such a statement is arbitrary and has a specific signature, Maria Giovanna Maglie.
[M.G.M.] Her mother, Piera Maggio, has always been very capable of being present in national and local newspapers and television, sending out messages that are as continuous and transversal as they are scarcely understandable.
[U.P.I - C.D] But wasn't Dr. Maglie talking about Denise's kidnapping? So the article could have been called "Different ways of judging Mrs. Maggio"? Let's delve into the text anyway: it says that "her mother (..) has always been very capable of being present in national and local newspapers and television." We are not aware that Mrs. Maggio has any special pass for television programs. It is the journalists and editorial offices themselves who invite her because of the "extraordinary interest" that Dr. Maglie herself spoke of. The fact that Piera Maggio is widely followed is a positive thing, and it is a concession from the public to offer her so much esteem and consideration. This goodwill does not depend on any alchemy of Mrs. Maggio. Even in this case, we do not understand the meaning of the second part of the sentence, which we quote in full: "sending messages as continuous and transversal as they are scarcely understandable." Once again, there has been an attempt to combine something true (in the first part of the text) with something arbitrary and debatable (in the second part). Furthermore, we reiterate that Mrs. Maggio is very much loved by the public because she is very understandable, and therefore insisting on saying that she sends "incomprehensible" messages is absolutely false or denotes the extreme ignorance of those who write those words, because they cannot understand what a simple person is saying.
[M.G.M] I chose to draw attention to this ambiguity not because it was unknown, but to better understand what the investigators' activity was and whether behind the lady's words and the silence of the Prosecutors the truth of a known and unspoken case is hidden.
[U.P.I - C.D] And we have chosen to contest one by one the false, insensitive, and absurd remarks of Dr. Maglie. We continue with the words "on this ambiguity" noting that Dr. Maglie has yet to demonstrate that there is any ambiguity. She also adds "not because it was not known." Dear Dr. Maglie, we believe that the things you speak of are known only to yourself! As already stated, no one has ever perceived any ambiguity. We do not understand the meaning of the sentence "to better understand what the investigators' activity was and whether behind the lady's words and the silence of the Prosecutors the truth of a known and unspoken case is hidden." By law, in fact, the Prosecutors must not publicly disclose the results of the investigation while it is ongoing. So obviously they are "silent." As for Mrs. Maggio's words, nothing is being hidden; on the contrary, the desire of a mother to embrace her daughter again is clear and explicit to everyone. Dr. Maria Giovanna Maglie assumes direct responsibility for this insinuation, as she has no evidence to prove that there is "the truth of a known and unspoken case."
[M.G.M] I am surprised to be considered offensive, especially if the reasoning starts from the assumption that one can only be sensitive if one is a mother. Let's meet whenever you want.
[U.P.I - C.D] Instead, we were surprised by your reasoning based on hypotheses and unproven facts. We were surprised by your insensitivity and insinuations. We were surprised by your skillful way of combining a true fact with a personal opinion. We were even surprised that you were given space in a national newspaper to write all this. After all, everyone is surprised by what they want. You have been considered offensive for the proven and repeated insinuations, for which you have been sued. We add that the letter from Hon. Barbara Mannucci is an open provocation to your way of superficially judging facts: in fact, you have been judged insensitive because anyone who has children knows well the suffering a parent endures when they lose them. Any parent would be terrified just by the idea of having a child kidnapped and therefore "speaks knowingly" about facts that you, on the other hand, judge with extreme superficiality and without the necessary sensitivity that would be desirable in these cases. Or is it also incomprehensible to you what Hon. Barbara Mannucci told you?

PRESS RELEASE Initiative to protect the tree dedicated to Denise
Denise's father, Piero Pulizzi, has written a letter to the security companies of the city of Mazara del Vallo, which they will receive in the coming days, in which he asks them to "protect" the little tree that the Municipality has dedicated to his missing daughter. "In the past, there have been absolutely unjustifiable acts of vandalism," Pulizzi himself declared, "and for this reason it is appropriate that there be supervision so that no one ruins what the entire city has created for my daughter. This dedication is the indelible sign of the love that a city has for its little girl, and no one should corrupt it." The letter specifies that the initiative will also require the participation of the Municipality and the Pro-loco, in order to install an infrared camera that can broadcast real-time images of this city symbol dedicated to Denise over the internet, while at the same time ensuring its proper protection. In this way, anyone, in Italy and abroad, will be able to see the tree dedicated to the little girl.

2) Regarding the article published in "il giornale" on October 26, 2008, the day of Denise's eighth birthday, written by Dr. Maria Giovanna Maglie, we proceeded with a text analysis to better understand what might have been the assumptions behind the drafting of such article. For each sentence by the author, in bold [M.G.M], follows the extended comment in italics by the journalists of the Public Information Office of the Association Cerchiamo Denise Onlus, [U.P.I - C.D].
Here is the text of the article:
[M.G.M] Two weeks ago I prepared a Vie en rose about the disappearance of Denise Pipitone and the certainly unusual behavior of her mother, Piera Maggio, who, since the moment of the kidnapping, has been sending indirect messages on TV to some keen observer.
[U.P.I - C.D] The author of the text assumes responsibility for the words "certainly abnormal behavior of her mother" and "sends transversal messages on TV." We wonder on what basis the author makes such insinuations, since Mrs. Maggio has done nothing but send DIRECT messages to the kidnappers for the release of her daughter. Moreover, "the good connoisseur," in relation to the previous article, would be the alleged Muslim father, while everyone knows he is Italian and his name is Piero Pulizzi, a driver from Mazara del Vallo. Unless the girl has two fathers, the house of cards built by Mrs. Maglie is not even supported by the objective truth of the facts (that is, if there is no Muslim father, it means that Mrs. Maggio cannot send messages to this alleged father!). We are surprised that "the newspaper" and in particular its Director, who has the ethical and moral obligation to ensure correct information, publishes such absurdities, not even supported by real facts. We assume that he did not read the article, knowing the professionalism of colleague Mario Giordano.
[M.G.M] I know how to write an article without fear of a lawsuit, above all I would not know how to write an article offensive to the dignity of a woman.
[U.P.I - C.D] We know perfectly well that a journalist who has worked for years knows how to write an article without fear of a lawsuit. The problem is that this time she did, and therefore she was sued. Regarding the claim that Dr. Maglie would not know how to "write an article offensive to the dignity of a woman," we recall that in the previous article she basically attributed to Mrs. Maggio that: 1) she does not know how to speak Italian 2) she would have many lovers 3) she does not tell the truth on television 4) she sends secret signals to the man (who does not exist, editor's note) and to his accomplices.
It is the opinion of the undersigned party, but we believe of all Italian women, that receiving these compliments is VERY DAMAGING to one's dignity.
[M.G.M] But some folkloric character from the opposition, one of those who usually speaks very badly of Piera Maggio, decided that I offended the people of Mazara and the poor lady, and asked, boom, for my resignation.
[U.P.I - C.D] Maybe they didn't write their thoughts in the newspapers, as Dr. Maglie did. Perhaps there are people, from any political alignment, who have respect for children, especially when they fall into misfortune.
[M.G.M] In these cases, localism quickly follows: local rags get heated, some majority representative joins in out of sycophancy. No one has the shred of honesty needed to say that I wrote a thousandth of what everyone here says.
[U.P.I - C.D] Basically, everyone who told her that she wrote horrible things is a victim of localism or does it to flatter someone. Maybe there are also those who write to her simply because they considered her comments terrible. It would be appropriate for Dr. Maglie to name the people who say what they say, so we could certainly agree with her.
In conclusion of this text analysis, we would like to add that if a person defames another by saying that the opinions expressed are those of third parties, they must actually prove the authorship of such statements, otherwise anyone could say anything against another person with absolute impunity.

In an open letter addressed to Mario Giordano, director of "Il Giornale," Hon. Barbara Mannucci intervenes in the controversy generated by an article written in the same newspaper by Maria Giovanna Maglie, dated October 15, 2008, in which "gratuitous words full of malice" were directed at Piera Maggio, Denise's mother. The document is a heartfelt exhortation to stop publicly hurting "a mother who suffers terribly from the disappearance of her daughter" and who "fights every day to ensure that her daughter is not forgotten as unfortunately has happened in many other cases." The letter goes on to reiterate that "the stupid comments about Mrs. Maggio's Italian" are "in very poor taste," as are "all the unpleasant and suggestive comments contained in the article." The document ends with a very strong note from Mannucci herself, who openly criticizes Maria Giovanna Maglie's position, stating that "not having children" she cannot "even remotely imagine what it means and how deep the bond between a mother and a daughter can be," and therefore "she cannot be asked for solidarity."

Today, Sunday, October 26, little Denise Pipitone, the girl kidnapped on September 1, 2004, turns 8 years old. To not forget her and to keep attention on the case, on Monday, October 27, an event will be held in her honor at Villa Iolanda, in front of the tree planted in her name in recent months. The event has been organized to request that the investigations continue without pause and at the same time to ideally send her a message of birthday wishes and hope. The children attending the event will have the opportunity to read some birthday messages, followed by brief speeches from institutional representatives and Denise's mother, Piera Maggio. *** Above all, a mother *** I decided to write personally on the blog to express all my regret in seeing that some people, in my opinion lacking the concept of solidarity, promote battles against the initiatives we carry out, and against me in particular.
I am accused of not being a mother who gives up, but one who fights to find her daughter, and even worse, I am criticized because I have appeared numerous times on television programs and in newspapers.
To these people, who have not understood the real reasons behind my actions, I cannot and do not want to wish upon them what I am going through, but sometimes I think they do not realize that I would give them all the fame and all the space on TV and in the newspapers, if only I could embrace my daughter again right away.
If I fight, I do it for my little girl and for all the children of our country. If I express my opinion, it's because people feel that I am saying true things that concern everyone. So why persist with useless criticism against a mother who suffers day after day?
I leave to those who have a heart every judgment of my mistakes. Do not forgive me for anything if I am wrong, but help me to find my daughter. If instead you think that I can do something for you, then support me and let me feel that the path I have chosen is the right one, for the good of our children.

Personal opinions are not commented on, only indicated. The opinions of the editorial staff are reported in parentheses with the wording "n.d.r". The remaining part is a linguistic comment. All this because we would also like to express our views on this specific targeted public attack on Mrs. Maggio, highlighting every detail we have found.
Here is the text of the article:
[M.G.M.] The reconstruction of the grown-up face of Denise Pipitone is not all that surprising; we have seen many images of girls aged, perhaps artificially, and only on a computer, shown on TV and in newspapers, for useless wanted posters without even a reward. We always hope that somewhere they are alive.[U.P.I-C.D.] Usually the expression "face" or at most "little face" is used. The expression "faccetta" in a serious context such as the search for a missing minor is not very appropriate for a little girl. It appears to have a derogatory tone towards the minor herself. At most, it could be used in a joking context, associated with other terms like "funny little face" etc., but only in certain contexts. In a public statement, it is decidedly inappropriate. The fact that the new image of the girl is not particularly surprising is a personal opinion of the author of the text. The meaning of the expression "perhaps aged for pretend" is unclear. It is a rendering, not a photo, with the limitations of this type of technique, but it is certainly not a fiction: the premise is still scientific, so much so that the Carabinieri's RIS uses this technology for investigations. We are certain that the Carabinieri do not rely on imagination for the search for a minor. With the expression "useless wanted posters without even a reward," a sense of "uselessness" is transferred to the searches, aggravated by the association with the image of "WANTED" posters typical of western movies. The fact is that those wanted were criminals, while here we are talking about a little girl. And there is no sense in associating "a bounty" with a child. The last expression "We always hope that somewhere they are alive" almost seems like a circular closure to a speech that instead expressed the opposite, or at least it seems that the author of the text hopes that the minors are alive but at least expresses disappointment with the image processing techniques used in the searches. The point is that the author does not emphasize the concept connected to the hope for the minors' lives; in fact, it almost seems to subtly question it given the form of the sentence. In Italian, the expression "sempre che siano vive" is often used to mean that there is little hope in this regard, and if we notice the phrase "we always hope that somewhere they are alive," it seems to be constructed with this underlying negative tone. In fact, the expression "we all hope they are alive" could have been used.[M.G.M.] After the Emanuela Orlandi case, I confess that few events have surprised me. But in Denise's case, I am very interested in the evolution of her mother's face, once again on the small screen pronouncing her sentences that I still do not understand.
[U.P.I-C.D.] The first observation is a personal opinion. In the second sentence, the expression "faccia" (face) is again used for Denise's mother, which is an unpleasant way to refer to a person's face in a public broadcast. Reused at this point in the discussion, it seems to want to connect back to the beginning of the text, creating a derogatory play on words where the "mother" has the "face" while the "daughter" has the "little face." The last expression is "once again on the small screen saying things I still don't understand," which clarifies that according to the author, Mrs. Maggio is often on television saying things that the author herself finds incomprehensible. This is a personal opinion.
[M.G.M.] The Italian has improved, but I still don't understand.
[U.P.I-C.D.] It is evident that according to the author, Mrs. Maggio did not know how to speak Italian well, and although her delivery has improved, it still remains incomprehensible. This is a personal opinion. The issue connected to this statement is the association between the Italian language (understood as correct diction) and the fact that what Mrs. Maggio expresses is not understandable to the author of the text. By openly commenting on Mrs. Maggio's technical-linguistic abilities, the author indirectly relies on the latter's level of education, turning the legitimate opinion "I do not understand what she says" into the yardstick for a person's expressive abilities. In short, the author sets her own personal level of understanding as the index of another individual's expressive abilities. (It could be added that it is not expected of the mother of a missing minor to be a television presenter or an elegant social conversationalist: probably it is not the form that is appreciated by the public, but the substance, and this is proven by the television approval ratings that increase with each broadcast in which Mrs. Maggio is present. Probably some of the millions of viewers do understand what Mrs. Maggio says. Editor's note).
[M.G.M.] I have become more interested in the way some Sicilians express themselves because I have been living in Sicily for a few months. I accepted the position of Councillor for Culture and other matters in the Regional Province of Trapani, and I still don't know if I made a sensible choice, but I do know that the events between Trapani and Mazara del Vallo intrigue me.
[U.P.I-C.D.] (We are happy for her that she may have found her professional field of expertise, but we hope that there will never again be incidents between Trapani and Mazara to intrigue her, especially if they involve the kidnapping of minors, ed.).
[M.G.M.] Spicy versions of the girl's kidnapping are circulating here in very low voices. One predominates: the real father, among the local lovers attributed to the lady—no one knows with what evidence—would be an Arab and a fervent Muslim, who would have taken her to raise her in the way he considers sacred and not sacrilegious.
[U.P.I-C.D.] Unreliable sources of information are, in fact, unreliable sources. Publishing misleading or unverified news in national newspapers is unprofessional. There are indeed many psychologically disturbed people who move about freely: the task of those involved in public information is to be able to discriminate the informational heritage by discerning real facts from imaginary ones. Gossip rumors and the expressive style connected to such a context (such as "spicy versions of the kidnapping of the girl") are not suitable for the circumstance.
[M.G.M.] The mother, who would know everything, remains silent, or uses indirect and roundabout phrases because she hopes in this way to see her daughter again sooner or later. Every time she gives an interview, every time she appears on Chi l'ha visto, or on Porta a porta, this is what she intends to do: to remind that she knows, that she is waiting, to send signals to the man and his accomplices.
[U.P.I-C.D.] In this passage, a peculiarity can be observed: the use of the conditional, which is mandatory when referring to unproven facts (hence the common expression "the conditional is mandatory"), here comes up against the rest of the discourse, where the indicative is used, a verb form to express real facts. Therefore, the author quickly transforms a hypothesis into a reality, and here commits the crime of defamation. In fact, by using the indicative in the phrase "this is what she intends to do: to remind that she knows, that she is waiting, to send signals to the man and his accomplices," the author fully assumes the responsibility connected to these statements, as they are no longer hypotheses. (Who is the man she refers to? Who are his accomplices?, ed. note)
[M.G.M.] I wonder whether to believe it or not, specifying once again that it is local gossip and whispers, perhaps an urban legend. Certainly, Mazara del Vallo is home to the largest and also the oldest North African community in Italy.
[U.P.I-C.D.] The author, softening the tone, returns to considering the previous statements as hypotheses. The point is that earlier she wrote them in a way equivalent to real statements. Furthermore, the second sentence placed in this context makes the previous writing even heavier, since if Mazara del Vallo is home to the largest North African community in Italy, then, by this logic, the insinuation of having had the child from a relationship with an "Arab and devout Muslim" becomes even more burdensome.
[M.G.M.] Of course, the lady knows to whom she sends her messages.
[U.P.I-C.D.] Yet another statement using the indicative. This is an insinuation, as when decontextualized it could even seem like a positive quality (indicating a person capable of communicating), but in this case, after openly expressing doubts about Mrs. Maggio's dialectical abilities, the residual meaning is negative, implying the existence of a relationship with the aforementioned man, the recipient of these "coded" messages.
[M.G.M.] Is it possible that Italian investigators and law enforcement know nothing about these suggested leads? If there were any truth to them, would they have kept quiet, investigated, covered up, swept it under the rug? Maybe Denise's mother is afraid to confide?[U.P.I-C.D.] Law enforcement always evaluates the family context before any other element, so if nothing has been found in this regard after 4 years, it is unclear why the author insists on the subject. It is probably an attempt to pressure the reader, in order to support the thesis that the event is real and the investigators were unable to uncover it. The investigators do not remain silent, do not cover up, do not conceal. Unless there is different evidence, one cannot accuse or insinuate anything about the entire Police force or the Carabinieri with the phrase "if there were something true, would they have remained silent, investigated, covered up, concealed?". And then a new insinuation turned into a question, in which reference is again made to Mrs. Maggio's "hidden truth," which she supposedly did not want to confide. In practice, the use of the rhetorical question is instrumental in planting a doubt in the reader, a doubt that the author in the previous lines has explicitly stated as an actual declaration.
[M.G.M.] Maybe instead it's all nonsense, village gossip that shouldn't be listened to, and the girl is a victim of family feuds rather than some Roma gang.
[U.P.I-C.D.] The author once again softens the previous tones, once again raising doubts about the previous observations.
[M.G.M.] But in these widespread versions here in western Sicily, where Africa is very close, no one seems to believe.
[U.P.I-C.D.] The author, referring to the versions to believe, certainly gives weight to that of the hidden Arab lover. The reference to Africa is absolutely explicit, recalling the previous concept of the "North African community" of Mazara del Vallo. So once again, it is an insinuation.

According to the opinion of this press office, there are grounds to take legal action by contesting each of the insinuations reported here one by one. We suggest proceeding with a direct request to the publisher for a retraction as provided for by law, with the possibility of obtaining the same space—in terms of character count—published on the same page of the aforementioned article, and possibly on the same day of publication. The recent statements by the Public Prosecutor of Marsala, Alberto Di Pisa, according to which the meeting with Denise's mother took place in a calm atmosphere, have led us to the following considerations: on October 9, 2008 (Thursday) at around 11:00 am, Mrs. Maggio requested images of her daughter from the prosecutor, but was denied them for proven investigative reasons. The same prosecutor later declared to ADN/KRONOS: "I could not give the lady the photo (the new image of the child created by the Ris): there is an ongoing investigation and I would have violated the rules." However, we verified that on October 13, 2008 (Monday), all newspapers, television stations, and news outlets in our country had the new image renderings of the child. We note that at the Marsala Public Prosecutor's Office, things work like this: in just 4 days (including 2 holidays), documents that are confidential (for the mother) become public (for all of Italy). We conclude by observing that Denise's Press Office never received the new images.

The photos of Denise Pipitone obtained with age progression
Rome, 14/10/2008 "During the meeting with the new prosecutor of Marsala, Alberto Di Pisa, an appointment I strongly wanted, I had asked that the prosecutor's office as soon as possible release the new image of Denise as reconstructed by the RIS of Rome, but he replied that he would never give me the image because it was a classified document." These are the harsh words of Piera Maggio, the mother of Denise Pipitone, in light of the recent release of the "aged" photos of the child. She continues: "I also want to say that the request for the age progression (the computer system for 'aging' the original photo of Denise, ed.) came from an initial request of mine at the end of July 2008, in agreement with the Prosecutor's Office of Marsala, motivated by the need for many people to have an updated image for the searches. In fact, this processing was carried out quickly precisely to meet this need." Piera Maggio also cannot understand the way she was received at the Prosecutor's Office: "At this point, I don't understand the attitude of the new prosecutor: he was very formal at this first meeting, and instead I hoped to start a new positive path. By the way, he did not give me any words of comfort. Without being informed in advance, former prosecutor Sciuto was also present at the meeting and he too started an argument with me about the investigation matters." Denise's mother's statement ends on a bitter note: "I am sincere: in all these years I have trusted the Marsala prosecutor's office but now I no longer do. I did not go to meet the new prosecutor to argue. I haven't done so for four years and I don't understand why I should start now. On the contrary, it is I who cannot accept their harsh and argumentative behavior towards me; moreover, if in these four years on some occasions I have given vent to my pain as a mother, also expressing some disappointment about the investigations carried out, I have done so only in the appropriate place, with the people conducting the investigations, that is, in the same Prosecutor's Office of Marsala, and not publicly." A particular appreciation is expressed in favor of the Carabinieri: "My heartfelt thanks go to the RIS of Rome for the work done and I take this opportunity to emphasize that the processing of the image should not be considered as a current photograph, but only as a possible reconstruction of my daughter's features, so no eight-year-old girl can be excluded a priori based solely on the new photos."

HERE IS DENISE'S FACE TODAY - 13.10.2008
ROME - The face of Denise Pipitone, the girl who disappeared from Mazara del Vallo in 2004 at just 4 years old, has been reconstructed by the RIS Carabinieri of Rome, who, on the orders of the Marsala prosecutor's office, have created two images of what the girl might look like today.
"The images were created using the 'Age progression' technique, which reproduces, updating them, the likely features of Denise," explains Lieutenant Colonel Luigi Ripani, who will talk about it this evening on Chi l'ha visto, which will return to cover the case.
The two images are very similar to each other: in one, the girl has bangs and in the other her forehead is uncovered, the features of the nose are slightly different, but overall the face is the same.
"Of course, there is no certainty that Denise, today, would actually look like this," says Lieutenant Colonel Ripani, who explains that "it is much easier to reconstruct the aging process in an adult, whose face essentially remains the same, than the growth process in a child."
However, he adds, starting from photos of Denise and the features of some of her relatives and cross-referencing all the available data thanks to a special software, "we managed to obtain an image," explains the officer, "which we believe may be very similar to the current face of little Denise."

Meeting in Rome with the Minister of Justice. Piera Maggio and Barbara Mannucci together for a new law.
Rome, 09/23/2008, 8:00 PM. The meeting between Piera Maggio, accompanied by Hon. Barbara Mannucci of the PDL, and the Minister of Justice, Angelino Alfano, scheduled for 7 PM today, ended a few minutes ago. The Minister, who has always followed Denise's case, showed great moral support towards the child's mother and guaranteed the utmost willingness to cooperate. For this purpose, a dossier prepared initially by Denise's family law firm was handed to the Minister, containing a package of legislative revision proposals, first and foremost the one concerning the abduction of minors without the purpose of extortion. This openness was greatly appreciated by Piera Maggio herself, who commented: "Events like this help me feel less alone in my search for Denise: the participation shown by the Minister gives me hope for good results. For now, we have opened a channel of communication." Barbara Mannucci commented positively on the meeting: "He received us with great willingness and we presented our proposal directly to Dr. Iannini of the legislative office, who was present at the meeting with the Minister. It is an encouraging start. Now there is work to be done." In the coming days, the first feedback from the Ministry is expected.

Perspectives on reforming criminal law for the protection of minors, and perspectives on reforming criminal procedure rules
The recent meeting with the Minister of Justice, Angelino Alfano, allowed Piera Maggio to present a series of proposals, initially prepared by the legal team of Denise's family, aimed at modifying and supplementing the current legislation, which is also lacking in the protection of minors. It should be noted that for years Mrs. Maggio herself has been fighting for these important revisions to the current legal system. At the time of delivery, the package consisted primarily of the request to introduce Article 605 bis, to support the more generic crime of kidnapping with the more specific crime of child abduction, but also the amendment of certain procedural rules to intervene more effectively in this context. This could represent a real turning point in dealing with difficult and complex cases like those that continue to make headlines. Secondly, according to Denise's mother, it is important to amend Article 574 of the Penal Code regarding child abduction between parents, for which currently proceedings can only be initiated by a complaint from the injured party and the penalty for the perpetrator is very low. For this reason, it was requested that proceedings be initiated ex officio with a higher penalty ranging from 3 to 10 years, unless the responsible parent changes course, in which case the penalty would range from one to three years. Minister Alfano was also asked to amend Article 10 relating to juvenile proceedings, which currently does not allow the victim to join as a civil party. It was considered essential to include this issue in the phenomenon of bullying in order to counteract the massive criminogenic power that unfortunately is spreading in our society, but with a special assurance on a further amendment to the Code of Criminal Procedure, that of Article 410 c.p.p. This further amendment concerns the opposition to the request for dismissal, which is currently only available to close relatives in the event of the death of the abducted person, since, paradoxically, at present it can only be carried out by the kidnapped or missing person. "This package of amendments to the current legislation can truly represent a change in cases of child abduction and also in other contexts," reiterates Piera Maggio, "so it is absolutely essential that the Minister include these rules in an upcoming decree law and that these proposals subsequently become law in all respects."

All statements of solidarity and affection for little Denise and her mother, Piera Maggio, who responds to her supporters: "Have you ever wondered why I keep fighting always and in any case, exposing myself in the media and sometimes even enduring harsh criticism and summary judgments? Have you wondered why I don't want to stay within the walls of my house and instead try to be highly visible in the media? All this is solely and exclusively because of you who support me in the search for my daughter, so that she is not forgotten and can have hope of returning home one day. After the statements by the Greek police according to which the girl found on the island of Kios is not Denise Pipitone, Piera Maggio released an official statement to the media: "I thank everyone for participating in the search for Denise, but I ask you not to be disheartened by the negative outcome of this report. I had invited everyone to be cautious and I myself tried not to place too much hope, because there really are so many reports. And some of these have also required DNA testing in the past. What I would like to emphasize, however, is that from recent events it is clear that my daughter is being searched for all over the world. The great media interest that has arisen from this report therefore conveys a positive note, namely that many more people, especially abroad, have mobilized for my little girl, because they believe her return home is possible. In Denise's case, in fact, there is no specific geographical area for the searches, but it is possible that she could be anywhere on the planet. My hope is that all the attention that has developed internationally will lead to a continuous search even far from the spotlight and the press. It is necessary to understand that children must be searched for even on those days when there is no news, and when there is no case that triggers media interest."

Mazara del Vallo, 09/11/2008. Piera Maggio, the mother of little Denise Pipitone, regarding the recent events, issues the following statement to all media outlets. "Last night I was contacted by the Carabinieri of Mazara del Vallo, because through Interpol, a report had arrived concerning a minor seen in Greece, who had some physical features compatible with those of my daughter. They showed me an image on the computer, not particularly clear, but I still thought it appropriate to proceed with all the necessary checks to verify the identity of the child. Therefore, a DNA test will be carried out, and after the result of this test, the family will take an official position regarding this new possibility. However, I add that in general one should never create false expectations, because thousands of reports have come from all over the world, and for many of these there was not all the media attention we are seeing at this time. As you know, many associations and organizations abroad collaborate with us in the search and they too are confident of a positive outcome for this complicated situation. In any case, I am waiting for certainties and not hypotheses, I am waiting for facts and not words: if this child is my daughter, my joy as a mother will be boundless; if it is not her, I will continue to fight. Therefore, I invite everyone to moderate easy enthusiasm and to help me look for my daughter even if this report turns out to be fruitless. One must never lose hope. I will always say it: my daughter is alive. Help me bring her home."

The strong participation of the political world eased her pain, the imminent meeting with Minister Alfano gave hope to the courageous mother from Mazara del Vallo, but the person who convinced her to suspend her hunger strike was the only one who really could: her eldest son. The facts are recounted in their simplicity directly by Piera Maggio herself: "Today my son told me he didn't want to eat. I insisted and he said these words to me: -Mom, if you don't eat and continue the hunger strike, I will do it with you. I won't leave you alone-." Hon. Barbara Mannucci of the People of Freedom responds to Piera Maggio's appeal, asking her to end her hunger strike. The news arrived just minutes ago from Rome through an official press release. The document reads: "Following the wonderful initiative organized by Piera Maggio in Mazara del Vallo on the occasion of the fourth anniversary of the kidnapping of her little Denise, I would like to express all my closeness and affection to her." The statement continues: "The balloon full of messages for Denise that was released into the sky has arrived here in Rome and, symbolically picking it up, I have accepted the appeal that Mrs. Maggio has been making to the institutions for too long so that the new crime of child abduction is introduced into the Penal Code as soon as possible." And finally: "Addressing Piera Maggio directly, I ask her to end the hunger strike because this time there are those who are working for her and for little Denise: she must be convinced that she will have all my time and everything in my power, as a PDL parliamentarian, to create that necessary bridge with the competent Ministers, Angelino Alfano for Justice and Mara Carfagna for Equal Opportunities, so that finally something changes, for little Denise and for all the other children who unfortunately find themselves in the same situation."
